Borrowing-proofness of the Lindahl rule in Kolm triangle economies

چکیده

In the context of a simple model of public good provision, we study the requirement on an allocation rule that it be immune to manipulation by augmenting one’s endowment through borrowing from the outside world. We call it open-economy borrowing-proofness (Thomson, 2009). We ask whether the Lindahl rule satisfies the property. The answer is yes on both the domain of quasi-linear economies and on the domain of homothetic economies. However, on the classical domain (when preferences are only required to be continuous, monotone, and convex), the answer is negative. We compare the manipulability of the rule through borrowing and its manipulability through withholding. We also asks whether the rule is immune to manipulation by borrowing from a fellow trader, closed-economy borrowing-proofness. We obtain a parallel set of answers. The negative results hold no matter how small the amount borrowed is constrained to be. Key-words: Public good; Lindahl rule; Kolm triangle; borrowing-proofness; withholding-proofness.

Rochester Borrowing-proofness Borrowing-proofness

We formulate and study the requirement on an allocation rule that no agent should be able to benefit by augmenting his endowment through borrowing resources from the outside world (alternatively, by simply exaggerating it). We show that the Walrasian rule is not “borrowing-proof” even on standard domains. More seriously, no efficient selection from the endowments-lower-bound correspondence, or ...

No . 629 PAIRWISE STRATEGY - PROOFNESS AND SELF - ENFORCING MANIPULATION *

“Strategy-proofness” is one of the axioms that are most frequently used in the recent literature on social choice theory. It requires that by misrepresenting his preferences, no agent can manipulate the outcome of the social choice rule in his favor. The stronger requirement of “group strategy-proofness” is also often employed to obtain clear characterization results of social choice rules. Gro...

Impossibility results for parametrized notions of efficiency and strategy-proofness in exchange economies

We study a standard model of exchange economies with individual endowments. It is well known that no rule is individually rational, e cient, and strategyproof. In order to quantify the extent of this impossibility, we parametrize axioms on allocation rules. Given an axiom A, a parametrization of A is a continuum of axioms {δ-A}δ∈[0,1] such that (i) δ-A is equivalent to A only if δ = 1; (ii) δ-A...

Indifference and the uniform rule *

We consider private good economies with single-plateaued preferences. We show that the uniform rule is the only allocation rule satisfying indifference (in terms of welfare), strategy-proofness and no-envy. Indifference (in terms of welfare) means that if one allocation is recommended, then another allocation is recommended if and only if all agents are indifferent between these allocations.  ...
